An FPGA developer going by blahm1d has done what many in the retro hardware community thought was unlikely: shipping a working MiSTer FPGA core for Midway’s Wolf Unit arcade board. The release covers NBA Hangtime and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 at launch, with Pixel Cherry Ninja reporting that additional titles in the Wolf Unit library are on the way.

Just as notable as the technical feat, however, is how blahm1d responded to accusations that the project relied on artificial intelligence. Quoted as saying, “I don’t even know what a prompt is,” the developer flatly rejected the allegations, calling them a complete fabrication.

The Wolf Unit and Its Legacy

Midway’s Wolf Unit was the arcade platform that carried some of the most recognizable fighting and sports titles of the mid-1990s into arcades across North America. Mortal Kombat 3, which debuted in 1995, was the headliner, followed by a string of sports and brawler conversions that included WWF WrestleMania, the original NBA Hangtime, NHL 2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge, NBA Maximum Hangtime, and the arcade sequel Rampage World Tour. For collectors and enthusiasts, faithfully recreating this hardware has long been considered a white whale within the preservation community.

Why This FPGA Core Matters

Unlike software emulation, which interprets original code on modern processors, an FPGA core reconstructs the target hardware at the logic level, often delivering cycle-accurate behavior that more closely matches original arcade boards. For a board as complex as the Wolf Unit, with its custom graphics hardware and proprietary sound architecture, achieving that level of fidelity through FPGA is a significant engineering undertaking, which is why many observers assumed it would remain out of reach for the MiSTer community.

The arrival of a working core opens the door for collectors who own original Wolf Unit boards but face reliability concerns, as well as for enthusiasts who want to experience the games on accurate display hardware without maintaining aging arcade cabinets. With NBA Hangtime and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 already playable, titles like Mortal Kombat 3, WWF WrestleMania, NHL 2-on-2 Open Ice Challenge, NBA Maximum Hangtime, and Rampage World Tour are expected to follow in subsequent updates, making this one of the most ambitious MiSTer FPGA efforts of the year.
