An unofficial homebrew port of Capcom’s 1991 arcade run-and-gun Midnight Wanderers is in active development for the Neo Geo, and a playable demo has already been released. The project is being led by DomKid, the homebrew developer best known for the Castlevania fan project Maria Renard’s Revenge.
Midnight Wanderers first appeared in arcades as part of Capcom’s 1991 Three Wonders multi-game cabinet, where it was one of three bundled titles. The game is a side-scrolling cooperative run-and-gun platformer that supports up to two players. Gamers take control of Lou and Siva, a pair of small-statured heroes styled as hobbits, who are dispatched to storm a demon’s fortress and recover a stolen chariot. Tucked inside a three-in-one cabinet release, Midnight Wanderers never received its own standalone home release on the 16-bit consoles of the day.
Why a Neo Geo Port Matters
The Neo Geo, SNK’s home-and-arcade hybrid platform that launched in 1990, has remained a magnet for homebrew tinkerers decades after its commercial run wound down. Its cartridge-based architecture, well-documented hardware, and an active community of collectors and developers make it a frequent target for unofficial ports of arcade and console classics that never received official conversions. Adding Midnight Wanderers to that unofficial library gives the title a much wider audience than the original multi-game arcade board ever enjoyed on its own.
For retro collectors, the appeal is straightforward. The original Three Wonders cabinet is a sought-after collector’s piece, and the individual game was never split off for separate home release. A working Neo Geo cartridge or compatible flash cart image opens the door for enthusiasts who want to experience this corner of Capcom’s catalog without tracking down a rare multi-game board.
A Demo Is Already Available
DomKid has released a playable demo so curious players can test the conversion before the full project lands. Details on the demo’s specific contents and the final release timing have not been spelled out, but the availability of even a slice of the game suggests the port is already in a playable state. Retro gaming followers can keep an eye on the developer’s channels for additional updates as the project moves toward completion.
