From 3DO to Saturn: A Pipeline Emerges

The hobbyist developer behind a much-discussed 3DO port of Super Mario 64 has now circulated preliminary footage of Nintendo’s 1996 platformer running on actual Sega Saturn hardware. The new demonstration, shared through the Eyepatch Entertainment project, is rough around the edges in the same way the earlier 3DO clips were — but it represents the next stop on a pipeline that ferries assets between very different 32-bit-era consoles.

According to the developer, the Saturn build leans on the asset work already produced for the 3DO version, then drops it into the open PowerSlave engine for the Saturn, a fan-made runtime originally built around the cult 1996 shooter. Enemy characters are rendered as flat sprites in the Saturn build, while the Mario figure itself is pulled from the recent Super Mario 64 decompilation project that has been producing clean, documented source for years.

The response to the original 3DO project drew sharp reactions across parts of the homebrew and preservation communities, who questioned where AI-assisted conversions sit relative to years of painstaking manual porting work. The developer has framed the effort as a passion project, saying in a statement: “[I] completely respect the geniuses that feel their work is being devalued.”

The Super Mario 64 decompilation stands as one of the most consequential fan projects of the modern homebrew era. Putting Mario on either box, even via largely automated tools, taps directly into the curiosity that drives retro tinkering.

Eyepatch Entertainment’s framing — building a pipeline rather than a finished product — places the work firmly in the same tradition as other community conversions that surfaced decades after the source material shipped. Whether the technique sparks a wave of similar ports or remains a curiosity, it is already acting as a referendum on how AI tooling fits into a hobby scene that has historically prized hand-crafted solutions.
